Evans brings success to Princeton
Allison Evans has been a part of some great field hockey teams. She has come through the ranks of the perennially strong Emmaus program, to now competing in the Ivy League at Princeton.
The rising sophomore garnered nearly every award possible as a Green Hornet. Some was a two-time state champion, four-time District 11 and Lehigh Valley Conference champion, the all-time leading goal scorer at Emmaus and in the state of Pennsylvania, and was also an academic All-American and scholar athlete.
"I think Emmaus really prepared me to go to Princeton," Evans said. "We worked really hard at the sport at Emmaus, and played at such a high level that when I got to Princeton I was used to the pace of the game at the Division I level. The training, the competition, I was used to it by then."
In her freshman campaign a year ago, her Tigers team won the Ivy League title with a 3-0 victory over Penn.
According to Evans, Princeton just seemed like the obvious choice after graduation.
"It was a mix between the academics and athletics part of Princeton," said Evans. "Both are at a really high level and they both challenge me. Princeton field hockey is also an amazing team to be a part of. The second I visited the campus I knew, it was just a matter of getting the scores to get in. It was an attraction I couldn't resist."
Playing field hockey at the highest level while also keeping up with grades at an Ivy League school is arguably the most challenging thing a student-athlete can do, but Evans seems to enjoy it.
"Time management is really important," added Evans. "You also have to make sure you get enough sleep too, so your body can recover to play the next day. It's just about time management, realizing you have to go to class, and then taking the free time that you have to start your homework and then just being efficient with everything that you do."
At Princeton, student-athletes don't declare a major until after their sophomore year, but Evans noted that she will most likely major in psychology.
The success has followed her from the beginning of her career at Emmaus, and continued onto the collegiate level. She led the team in goals scored with 11 and points (27) as a freshman in 2011. Evans started in all 18 games for the Tigers.
Again Evans credits her time at Emmaus for being a helping hand towards the success.
"Emmaus was a challenge because our coaches really wanted us to succeed," Evans said. "Every year we wanted to come in and improve. Each of us played the leadership role on the field. It was a growing experience for me, and those four years just prepared me as a person in general."
Evans added that this year they would like to add an NCAA tournament victory to go along with another Ivy League title. Last year ended with a 3-2 loss to UConn in a game in which Evans found the cage. This year's journey starts on August 31 at Duke.
