Emmaus offers fun activities in September

The Church of St. Ann, 415 S. Sixth St., will hold its 30th annual fall fest, 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 6; 5 to 11 p.m. Sept. 7 and 4 to 11 p.m. Sept. 8. The event features ethnic kitchen offerings (Friday and Saturday), carnival rides and games, crafts, face painting, cash bingo, outside food booths, a big ticket drawing, a beer garten and a tiki bar. Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., will host its annual Community Heroes Day, 6 p.m. until dark Sept. 11. The event provides an opportunity to meet and thank the people who take care of you. The event allows visitors to climb on a fire truck, sit in a police car, look inside an ambulance and talk with the emergency management personnel who staff the vehicles. There will also be free child identity kits available in the Margaret Gardner room of the library as time permits. The library will be closed for the Labor Day holiday, Sept. 1 and 3.

Dr. Ziad Munson of Lehigh University will deliver a talk about terrorism entitled, "The Great Red Herring: How al-Qaida Blinds Us to Terrorism" at the Emmaus Public Library 7 p.m. Sept. 13. Exciting things are happening in Emmaus' downtown Sept. 7 and 8. The merchants host a Sunset Stroll Sept. 7 with shops open until 8 p.m. Joel Shimer will perform on the Triangle 5 to 7 p.m.

On Sept. 8, Emmaus Main Street Partners will host a Farewell Summer Festival, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Activities will take place at various businesses and on the Triangle. The festival includes sidewalk sales 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; children's activities and games; a pet parade and costume contest and apple pie, hot dog, banana split eating, children's cupcake decorating and rib cook off contests.

The merchants will host a "Cash Mob" 10:15 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Creamery, 332 Main St. Attendees at a cash mob bring $10 and meet at a designated site where they are told the mystery store where they are invited to shop. It is a method of promoting a business as a way of supporting the community.

On Sept. 9, plan to attend the Emmaus Main Street Partners' all-you-can-eat Crab Fest 4 to 8 p.m. (last seating 6:30 p.m.) at Emmaus Community Park, Lions Club and North pavilions. Music will be provided by The Acoustic Project. The menu includes steamed blue crabs, clams, clam chowder, crab dip and crackers, chicken wings, chicken fingers, cheese steak sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and a variety of salads. The Emmaus Senior Citizens group begins its fall programs Sept. 7. The group meets 1 p.m. Fridays at St. Matthews E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. A gospel singer will entertain Sept. 7; Lehigh Valley Folk Music Society will perform Sept. 14; Vocalist Joe Chilcote will perform Sept. 21 and Sept. 28 is game day. Emmaus Historical Society begins its fall programs with a meeting 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifth & Chestnut streets. Emmaus author, historian and media personality Evan Burian will present a program on the "History of Football in Emmaus and Lehigh Valley." The society is taking orders through Oct. 10 for their apple dumpling sale fundraiser. In other society news, the members have read the entire Northwood Cemetery records and have published a book with tombstone inscriptions including an index to make it easy to locate gravesites. This 125-page publication is available for purchase. Stop at the museum or call 610-966-6591.

Emmaus Historical Society's museum, 563 Chestnut St., is open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The museum will also be open 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 and 26.

The borough of Emmaus will hold a community yard sale, Sept. 8. No yard sale permits are required for the sale. The rain date is Sept. 9.

The Emmaus borough offices and compost center will be closed Sept 3 for the Labor Day holiday.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Sept. 4 and 17 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St.

Raritan Valley will not pick up refuse or recycling on Labor Day; do not place items out for collection Sept. 2. Place refuse and recycling out for pick up Wednesday night for a Thursday pickup. For information, visit borough.emmaus.pa.us or call 610-965-9292.

The Emmaus Farmers Market, 235 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. The market offers cooking demonstrations, musical entertainment and tables for community groups as well as fresh produce and flowers.

Scott Rothenberger, the owner of PLACE, an interior and exterior architectural and landscape design firm, will present the program "Green Spaces for Better Places" at the Sept. 4 meeting of the Emmaus Garden Club. The public is welcome to attend. Doors open 12:30 p.m., refreshments are served, and the program starts 1 p.m. Meetings are held at Faith Presbyterian Church, Second and Cherokee streets.

The Emmaus Garden Club is hosting a bus trip to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, Sept, 18. The bus will leave Weis Market on Chestnut Street in Emmaus 7 a.m. and will return 8:30 p.m. The cost includes admission to the special exhibition, "Monet's Garden." The Lehigh Saengerbund, the 154-year-old German-American Society of the Lehigh Valley, will hold a Bavarian Oktoberfest, 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 21 and 22 (rain or shine) in the Emmaus Community Park Arts Pavilion. The event features typical German food, beer and musical entertainment. There is a cost.

Advance order tickets are available on a pulled pork sandwich or topped hot dog platter with two sides and a beverage for the 1803 House's A Very Merrie Halloween, a free family festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6. The food is catered by Royal Gourmet Foods. Tickets can be purchased at Sweet Memories, at the 1803 House table at the Emmaus Farmers Market 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2 or by calling 610-965-0512.

Get your tickets early for the Oct. 12 St. Ann's Women's Club Basket and Bags bingo because only 200 tickets will be sold. The gym doors open 7 p.m. and bingo starts 7:30 p.m. for the fundraiser held at St. Ann Parish, Sixth and Fairview streets. The event features prizes of filled Longaberger baskets and filled Vera Bradley bags, celebrity callers, free food and drink, raffle, 50/50 cash raffle and many door prizes. It is time to place your order for the Emmaus Lioness Club's 16th annual Apple Dumpling sale. The club's first sale was in 1997 when the members made 1,300 dumplings at the Moravian Church and the former Radcliff's Market. In 1998, they moved the operation to the Emmaus Bakery where they now make 3,000 apple dumplings annually. Proceeds from the sale are distributed to various charitable projects and agencies through the club's general welfare fund.

Last year, the club donated 152 apple dumplings to the Salvation Army to pack in Thanksgiving baskets which were distributed to needy families. The dumplings are available in regular or sugar free (Splenda). For cost and to preorder, contact Eileen Frick at 610-967-1720.
