The two new school board representatives for Catasauqua High School are active in a number of school sports and leadership programs.
Selena Contreras is a member of the CHS girls basketball and girls soccer teams. She is also a member of Varsity C Club and the student council.
Zachary Labeziu is a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams and is active as a Varsity C Club member and a senior class officer.
Contreras plans to attend Cedar Crest College and major in biology upon graduating. Labeziu said he hopes to major in criminal justice.
CHS Principal David Ascani told The Press both students were carefully chosen as a result of a number of factors.
"Both students were selected based on their leadership skills, commitment to academic excellence and a vested interest in Catasauqua High School and the entire Catasauqua community," he said.
At school board meetings, the two students will act as advocates and representatives of the student body.
"Their role as school board representatives is to share with the school board student concerns, provide input on various issues relative to the high school and to share information regarding high school activities and events," Ascani said.
They were approved by a school board vote in June and introduced during the board's July 9 meeting.
The students told The Press they are currently settling into their new role and once the school year begins they expect to report on school events and happenings.
